This work is an hommage to Rembrandt van Rijn’s Nicolaes Ruts, 1631, oil on panel, currently in the collection of the Frick, New York. In Sastoque’s painting, the sitter’s gaze follows us, no matter which angle we view it from. This man is a product of our illusion, and of the way in which the artist plays with our mind, producing an optical mixing effect with which he makes our eyes connect the separated and elongated particles in his technique, to be able to analyze them as a whole.
